History of Messengers

Messengers are a widely diverse group of souls. The role of a messenger is different from those of us who receive inner guidance and inspiration from time to time. The mantle of the Office of the Messenger is an auric field that assists them in carrying out their duties, which include anchoring into the physical world the Word, teachings, and concepts of the Ascended Masters. It is not an easy job to do.

No two messengers are alike and each has different duties. Looking at the names of the messengers sponsored by the Great White Brotherhood in the past century gives us a better understanding of this office in hierarchy. It is extremely rare to have a series of messengers in a row. This was an experiment conducted by the Great White Brotherhood to see how we would use the teachings and dispensations.

Sometimes a person in training or serving in the Office of Messenger looses the sponsorship of the Brotherhood by not fulfilling their responsibilities and upholding certain standards. Messengers are not necessarily one hundred percent accurate. Mrs. Prophet would often tell her students, “Don’t believe everything I tell you, go out and prove it for yourself!”

From the late 1800’s to the present the messengers have been:

Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, late 1800’s
Theosophical Society, Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, 1870’s
Agni Yoga, Helena and Nicholas Roerich (amanuenses) 1920’s and 1930’s
I AM Activity, Guy Ballard and Edna Ballard, 1930’s
Bridge to Freedom, Geraldine Innocente established in 1951

In 1952, Mark L. Prophet began his training as a messenger under the Ascended Master El Morya. For the next six years (1952-1958) Mark wrote down the teachings he received in a series of letters called the Ashram Notes. In 1958 El Morya, through Mark, founded the Summit Lighthouse, which began publishing weekly teachings of the masters called the Pearls of Wisdom. They are still being published today.

In 1961 Mark met his twin flame and future wife Elizabeth Clare Wulf and began training her to become a messenger under El Morya’s direction. They were married in 1963 and had four children. In 1961 Mark founded the Keepers of the Flame Fraternity Fraternity with the sponsorship of the Ascended Master Saint Germain. On February 26, 1973, Mark made his ascension. As his Ascended Master name he chose "Lanello" which is a combination of Lancelot and Longfellow, two of his past embodiments. His wife Elizabeth carried on their work until illness forced her to retire in 1998.

While there have been several offshoots of the Summit Lighthouse and those claiming to be messengers, many believe they do not have the Office, mantle or sponsorship of the Great White Brotherhood. This does not preclude other messengers from coming forth in the future.

Next we will take a quick look at the path of the masters.
